Driving in Iceland

Driving conditions all year round can be hazedous, but even more so in the winter months. As you would expect, Iceland does recieve quite a lot of snow from October onwards, so it is neccessary in most cases that vehicles are fitted with either snow tyres of studded (nailed) tyres. Your rental comapny will take care of this for you.

The speed linit in Iceland is 90 kmh on paved open roads, 80 kmh on gravel roads and 50 kmh for urban areas, then dropping to 30 kmh in residential areas.

By Icelandic law, all drivers must have their headlights turned on at all times whilst driving, this again highlights how fast the weather can change in Iceland.
